Throughout the third year of the EFC4CLIM project, a series of demonstrative interventions were successfully implemented across 13 schools and universities in Finland, Portugal, Romania, and Spain. These interventions encompassed a blend of structural enhancements aimed at improving sustainability performance, alongside purely educational initiatives.
In Spain and Portugal, the interventions primarily focused on enhancing comfort within learning environments through initiatives such as space revegetation and improved insulation. Romania's interventions centered on the installation of PV panels to reduce energy consumption and installing water sensors to eliminate water wasting. In Finland, the emphasis was placed on facility upgrades to promote recycling and sustainable transportation.
On the educational front, a significant portion of interventions revolved around the creation and development of new teaching materials for educators, the introduction of new courses, and the facilitation of workshop-based activities to instill sustainable attitudes among students. Additional initiatives included addressing food sustainability, organizing group discussions, talks, debates, contests, challenges, and educational visits.
Central to the success of these interventions is the effective communication of results and implementation strategies to both educational communities (students, teachers, administrative staff) and local communities (parents, citizens, and policymakers). Internal communication efforts are geared towards fostering engagement and maximizing the impact of results, while external communication with other schools aims to disseminate successful practices. Parents are engaged to garner support, spread awareness, and encourage involvement, while citizens are informed about sustainability objectives and practical approaches. Furthermore, targeted outreach to local councils, businesses, and media outlets plays a crucial role in advocating for sustainability actions, fostering community engagement, and promoting knowledge sharing.
The exemplary nature of these interventions, particularly in the realm of structural enhancements, serves as a blueprint for replication by other educational institutions and individuals within society. By sharing best practices and leveraging collective efforts, these interventions have the potential to drive meaningful change and empower communities towards a more sustainable future.
